DR. MAYA ANGELOU IN SO MANY WORDS...

When I think of Maya Angelou, feelings of a life of struggle for the emancipation of the black mind are conjured in the deepest parts of my soul. I remember the poems written by this legend and recited by many around the world amongst them the late South African liberation struggle icon, Mama Adelaide Tambo. In an exclusive interview with the legend, we speak about black America, African hopes and who Maya Angelou would like to be remembered as. And now "I know why the caged bird sings."

FEATURES

 TEA WITH JOSEPH KABILA

The youngest head of state on the continent is an interesting man who is respected the world over for his attempts at bringing peace and democracy to the DRC. The country's hope is pinned on an interesting individual who until recently had run the country as a single man. Toby AA Heaps had tea with him and brought back a chronicle of a conversation very few have had with an African head of state.

SIMPLY ANGELIQUE!

Angelique Kidjo is perhaps Africa's best music export to date. With a career spanning 3 decades, her music has become synonymous with her passion for all things African. Be it being on stage with Alicia Keyes or Manu Dibangu, she is known for her unwavering commitment to excellence. The founding editor of African ID Lifestyle, Themba Nkala, caught up with her in her Brooklyn, New York studios for a little tête-à-tête.

HOLIDAY HOME BLISS

Hawaii's coastline is adorned with holiday homes that would make any grown man cry. The trend amongst the famous and fortunate these days is to stay away from 5 star hotels, opting rather for the privacy of holiday homes rented out exorbitantly by property moguls around the world. Hawaii's holiday homes have quickly become a clear favourite to Middle Eastern oil merchants, African kings and Hollywood's finest.

YVONNE CHAKA CHAKA'S "TRANSITION TO A QUEEN"

Yvonne is a much loved modest musician whose music has been heard all over the world. We caught up with the "Princess of Africa" at her upmarket Bryanston, Johannesburg home to chat about her new CD and discovered she has transformed into a queen. What, with a prince like Themba Mhinga for a son and music producer, this lady of song is destined for the throne.

PHINDA PRIVATE GAME RESERVE

Perched in Northern KwaZulu Natal is a oasis of luxury whose story resonates in all the corners of the world, including the household of America 's famous Getty family. EN VOGUE

The South African fashion industry is expanding rapidly thanks to the ever growing middle class. Many young entrepreneurs have made names for themselves and in the process pocketed quite a few millions. We lay the red carpet for those whom we believe top the rat race. The versatile Craig Port, amazing Nkhensani Nkosi, over the top David Tlale and oh! so classic Gabi Rosenwerth have designs to write home about and write home, we certainly did.

COFFEE WITH DR. FELICIA MABUZA-SUTTLE

Dr. Felicia Mabua-Suttle is an amazing woman whose love for South Africa and the continent at large is cause to put a smile even on my sometimes sceptical face. Well, thanks to my dear friend Advocate Kevin Malunga, I got a chance to sit for a cup of coffee with this television legend "kesincokole" (have a heart to heart), as we would say in isiXhosa.  The "Conversation with Felicia" at the Johannesburg Park Hyatt's The Conservatory gave me interesting insights into the life of this South African woman extraordinaire

BEAUTY & INSPIRATION

The plight of HIV/Aids orphans in Africa is often times overlooked and if it is given the attention it deserves often times the children are further depressed by the dark cloud left by the deadly disease over their lives. In an absolute first, African ID Lifestyle organised a photo shoot in which these gems where put side by side some of the most recognised celebrities in South Africa. "Dressed to kill" in outfits from Woolworths they strut their stuff in front of our cameras with celebrity beau ideal Gerry Elsdom, fortunate socialite Edith Venter and musician extraordinaire Yvonne Chaka Chaka.

HEALTHY INDULGENCE

Fried strawberries and waffle? Maybe frilled Salmon and asparagus would sound more healthy? What of bourbon steak grilled to perfection and served with asparagus salads to die for. These dishes are quick to make and put the word health in the same sentence with indulgence, a thing rarely heard off. Indulge your sense in these dishes that defy odds! We even tell you about the health implications of each dish.
